Noma disease
Noma is a rapidly progressing gangrene that develops in the mouth, starting with a benign lesion and eventually attacking the soft tissues and bones, leaving serious facial damage. It mainly affects children aged 2 to 6 years. In the absence of treatment, 80%-90% of children affected by the disease die, while the survivors suffer from sequelae with functional, social and aesthetic consequences.
